ActivityWilliam Hunter (1718-1783), physician, was born at Long Calderwood, Lanarkshire. He studied at the University of Glasgow, 1731-1736 and gained his M D, 1750. Hunter was assistant to William Smellie, London, 1740-1741, assistant to James Douglas, 1741-1742 and tutor to William George Douglas, 1741-1749. From 1748-1749 he was surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital, and in 1749 he was surgeon at the British Lying-in Hospital. Hunter acted as Physician Extraordinary to Queen Charlotte, 1764-1783. He was the President of the Society of Licentiate Physicians, 1781. Hunter was a collector of books, manuscripts and artefacts, which he bequeathed to the University of Glasgow.
