Person NamePenicuik Farmers' Society; 1794-1952
ActivityIn 1794, prior to any organised local authority in the village of Penicuik, the local farmers had formed a society which acted as a basic police service until the establishment of an official village police station and police force. In 1847 they turned their attention to making improvements to agricultural practices and became officially known as the Penicuik Farmers' or Agricultural Society. In 1853 they altered the constitution and began organising cattle shows and awarding prizes for the best exhibits. The last show was held in 1868 when the Highland and Agricultural Society's Show began to be held in Edinburgh. The Society was still in existence up until 1952.
