ActivityJohn Milne, LLD, was the author of ‘The Etymology of the Placenames of Aberdeenshire’ and ‘Aberdeen’. John Milne was born in New Deer, Aberdeenshire, around 1831. He graduated MA from Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1849, and became a schoolmaster, first in Ellon parish, and then in King Edward parish from 1852. He received an honorary LL.D. from Aberdeen University in 1886, in recognition of his scholarship and erudition: he was the first schoolmaster in Aberdeenshire to receive an honorary LL.D. He retired in 1899, moved to Aberdeen and devoted himself to historical research, mostly of a local nature, and published some papers on local subjects. He died in 1914. His son, Dr. John Stewart Milne, also an alumnus of Aberdeen University, predeceased him by a year.
