Person NameGovan Peel Club; 1838-1856
ActivityThe Govan Peel Club first met in January 1838 when 14 members dined at the Stag Inn, Govan. The purpose of the club was to dine at least once a year on the anniversary of the Peel Banquet, which had been held in honour of Sir Robert Peel in the Grand Pavilion, Buchanan Street, 1837. Everyone who attended was to contribute 5 shillings for coal for poor families in Govan. There was a chairman and a secretary. Due to a change in Robert Peel's standing the last meeting of the club was held in 1842, and the minute books were closed in 1856.
