ActivityLaurence Austine Waddell (1854-1938), soldier and scholar, was the son of Rev T C Waddel and Jean Chapman and was born in Cumbernauld, 29 May 1854. He was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Medical Service and Professor of Chemistry and Pathology, Medical College, Calcutta, 1881-1886. Waddell was Deputy Sanitary Commissioner, India, and professor of Tibetan, University College, London. He was awarded an Ll D from the University of Glasgow, 1895. Waddell had a special interest in the history of Buddhism. He died in Rothesay, 19 September 1938, and bequeathed his personal library of books on Assyrian and Sumerian languages and archaeology to Glasgow University Library.
