ActivityAberdeen Crematorium Company was set up in 1936 and the secretary, from the start, was James Dewar. Dewar was a pillar of the community, a town councillor, a Justice of the Peace and member of the wartime Aberdeen Fire Brigade, but brought the Crematorium into disrepute in 1944 when he was found guilty of reusing and selling used coffins at the crematorium. He was replaced after his conviction, and the company was eventually taken over by Aberdeen City Council. The crematorium is situated at Kaimhill, to the south of Aberdeen, where it has been since its foundation. It was the sole crematorium until 1976, when a second crematorium was opened at Jessiefield. It served the whole of North East Scotland from Kincardine to Shetland.
