ActivityGeorge Newlands was an insurance secretary in Aberdeen in the first half of the twentieth century. His three children, George (1888-1928), Janet Roy (b.1893), and Bethia Muir (1895-1950), were all graduates of Aberdeen University, the two girls previously attending Aberdeen High School for Girls. George graduated MA and BSc in 1911 and was assistant in the Geology department of Aberdeen University until 1915, when he went to work as a chemist in explosives factories. After the war he became a research chemist and later a research and advisory officer in soils at the North of Scotland College of Agriculture. He died of illness in Berlin in 1928. Janet, graduating MA in 1914, became a teacher in Aberchirder, Duns and eventually Bathgate, where she taught from 1919 to her retirement in 1947. She returned to Aberdeen where she was still living in 1982. Bethia, who graduated MB, ChB, in 1919 and acquired her Diploma in Public Health in 1924, became a school medical inspector in Yorkshire, then later a medical officer in Middlesbrough. She died in Aberdeen in 1950.
