Person NamePowis Community Centre; 1947-; Aberdeen
ActivityPowis Community Centre appears to have been established in north Aberdeen in 1947. It had its own building, which was used for community events and also to make revenue by the letting of rooms to other societies. The management committee, which met about once a month, appointed a warden for the building, ran the canteen which was subsidised for members, arranged social and fundraising events, and included volunteers to visit the sick in the community and report on their progress. The area covered included both old and new housing in Powis Circle, Sunnyside Road, Knox Place, Hayton, Bedford Road and Sunnybank. Members were chiefly old age pensioners, though efforts were made to involve young couples and families and in 1969 when the centre was not doing well schemes were set up to attract the children of the neighbourhood for whom there were otherwise few facilities. The Powis Forum was formed in 1970, a group of local adults aiming to promote and develop community schemes, including such things as arranging to have the area photographed. The community centre still functions today in its premises in Powis Circle, Aberdeen.
