Person NameCornerstone Community Care; 1980-
ActivityCornerstone Community Care was founded in 1980 to provide ‘a quality supportive service to people with learning disabilities and other groups to enable them to live in the community’, encouraging people to live in their own homes and achieve greater independence and privacy. It is a charitable company, co-operating with Aberdeen Council, Scottish Homes and Langstane Housing Association to provide, by 1994, thirty-two homes based in ten project areas in the North East of Scotland, housing 130 residents. Funding comes from the central Department of Social Services, from the local authorities and Health Board, and from fundraising by volunteers which is required for the initial furnishing of the homes. The charity is run by a board of nine voluntary directors, with backgrounds in social work, community care or business management. Funds are also used to employ trained staff to look after residents in their own homes. In 2002, it had a head office in Aberdeen, area offices in Aberdeen, Stonehaven and Fochabers, and twenty-six homes in the North East.
