ActivityThe Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) was formed on 13 August 1859 by Act of Parliament (22 & 23 Vict, c 40) and was comprised of officers and members of the merchant navy to be called upon to serve with the Royal Navy during periods of emergency. In 1958 the Royal Naval Reserve, combined with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (RNVR), the Women's Royal Naval Reserve (WRNR) and the Queen Alexandra's Royal Naval Nursing Service (Reserve) (QARNNS(R)) to form the modern Royal Naval Reserve (RNR).
