ActivityHighlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is a non-departmental public body established under the Enterprise and New Towns (Scotland) Act, 1990 (c.35) with wide statutory powers to promote enterprise, training, business competitiveness and environmental improvement. It is the Scottish Executive's agency for economic and social development in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and superseded the Highlands and Islands Development Board. Highlands and Islands Enterprise is based in Inverness and the Board consists of 11 appointed members and a chief executive. Most of the funding is allocated through Local Enterprise Companies, of which there are 10 currently.
