ActivityThe Highlands and Islands Development Board was established in 1965 by the Highlands and Islands Development (Scotland) Act, 1965, as a grant aided body responsible to the government through the Secretary of State for Scotland. The Board was established to assist people of the Highlands and Islands to improve their economic and social conditions and to enable the Highlands and Islands to play a more effective part in the economic and social development of the nation. To achieve this the Board had powers to compulsorily acquire land, build factories, provide equipment and services and to set up businesses. The Board also administered a Grants and Loans scheme and provided assistance on management, accountancy etc. The headquarters of the Highlands and Islands Development Board were located in Inverness. In 1990 the Highlands and Islands Development Board was superseded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise which exists today as the Scottish Executive's agency for economic and social development in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and continues to occupy the same premises in Inverness
