Person NameHighland Railway Society; 1985-
ActivityThe Highland Railway Society was founded in 1985 and caters for all those interested in the history and workings of the Old Highland Railway, formed in 1865, and its successors. It has over 300 members world wide, including many professional railway men and produces a quarterly journal for the membership. Membership includes professional railwaymen, universities, museums, and other learned bodies, in addition to many whose interest is purely as a hobby. The Society's archives were transferred to the Highland Council Archive in Inverness, in 1998, the centenary year of the opening of the Highland Railway Company's direct line from Inverness to Aviemore, in October 1898. Prior to this the various plans, posters and books were in the hands of different members of the society in Scotland and England.
