Activity | Reverend Alexander Downie (1765-1820) was born on 6th July 1765, the son of John Downie, minister of Urray. He was educated at King's College, Aberdeen and graduated with an M.A. in 1784. He was licensed by the Presbytery of Lewis in 1787 and ordained minister of Lochalsh, Presbytery of Lochcarron, Synod of Glenelg, in 1791. He became chaplain to the 1st Battalion, 78th Highlanders in 1793. He had been an active supporter of the Gaelic School Society. He owned Conchra Estate, 1819-1822. He married Janet, daughter of Charles Mackinnon of Corrichateachan in 1795 and died in 1820. |
