ActivityMajor Colin Mackenzie (1919-1999) was born at Fawley, near Henley, on 23 March 1919. His father was a commissioner for the royal estate of Balmoral under George V and later moved to the estate of Farr in Inverness-shire. He was educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he joined the 2nd Battalion the Seaforth Highlanders in 1939. During the Second World War he was held as a prisoner of war in Colditz Castle and sent back information to MI9 using a coded system in letters to family and friends. In 1945 he was appointed MBE. He was also awarded the Military Cross. In 1945 he became ADC to Field Marshall Wavell, Viceroy of India and later became deputy military secretary. In 1947 he married Ann Fitz Roy, daughter of the Duke of Grafton. From 1951 Colin Mackenzie began a varied business career. He died on 1 October 1999.
