ActivityThe Lands Valuation Assessor was employed by Tayside Regional Council, although was an independent officer whose functions are determined by Statute. The Department of the Tayside Regional Assessor and Electoral Registration Officer was created in 1975 and incorporated the former valuation areas of Angus County, Perth and Kinross County and the City of Dundee. The Department functioned from three divisional offices in Dundee, Perth and Forfar. The Regional Assessor's office was situated in Dundee. Until 1989 all domestic and non-domestic lands and heritages were entered by the assessor but from that date, only non-domestic subjects were covered. The Abolition of Domestic Rates Act, ?, came into force on 14 September 1987, and conferred upon the Assessor the duties of Community Charges Registration Officer. From 1 April 1993 the Council Tax system was introduce and the Regional Assessor became responsible for maintaining a Valuation List. In 1996 a Valuation Joint Board for the former Tayside region was formed. As Electoral Registration Officer, the Regional Assessor was responsible for the annual preparation of the Register of Electors and the administration of postal and proxy voting and the dispatch of poll cards. Electoral registration became a function of the unitary councils in 1996.
