ActivityDuring the Crimean War (1853-1856), which was also known as the 'Great Patriotic War' to contempories, Queen Victoria (1819-1901) established a Patriotic Fund in order to collect donations for supporting the widows and orphans of soldiers. The Royal Patriotic Fund of Dundee was established by a public meetin held on the 13 November 1854 in the Thistle Hall, Union Street, Dundee. In November the theatre staged a play, the proceeds from which went to the Fund. On 12 December 1854 a resolution was passed to advertise for contributions in a newspaper. The last meeting was held on 1 August 1855, by which time the total funds raised amounted to just over £5,063 and were distributed in co-operation with the Royal Commission in the Dundee area.
