Activity | The office of town clerk does not emerge clearly until the survival of protocol books and council minutes, in the 16th century. The earliest extant protocol book dates from 1518 and the earliest council minute book from 1553. At that date their main functions were legal and secretarial. From 1626 the town clerk kept the burgh register of deeds. Among other duties the town clerk kept the records of the burgh. The office continued until 1975 when Dundee Corporation was replaced by the City of Dundee District Council and by Tayside Regional Council under the the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973 (c. 65). |
