Person NameDundee Burgh Court; -1824
ActivityThe burgh court in some form was probably as old as the burgh itself. The earliest extant burgh court book dates from 1550 and this series ends in 1898. In the sixteenth century and no doubt earlier the court had an important civil jurisdiction and a more restricted criminal one. The criminal jurisdiction was later rendered obsolete by the police courts held under a series of Dundee Police Acts from 1824 onwards. In 1975 the Police Court was superseded by Dundee District Court under the District Courts (Scotland) Act 1975 (c.20).
