ActivityJohn Lyon was a courtier of David II and was in the service of the Crown prior to 1368. He was appointed Chamberlain of Scotland in 1369. He was appointed Keeper of the Privy Seal in 1371 on the accession of Robert II. In 1375 he had a grant from the convent of Arbroath of the lands belonging to the abbey in Glamis. Sir John Lyon was knighted in 1377. He married in 1736 Princess Johanna Stewart, daughter of King Robert II by his first wife Elizabeth. Patrick Lyon, ninth Lord Glamis (1575-1615) was created Earl of Kinghorne, Lord Lyon and Glamis in 1606. Patrick Lyon, third Earl of Kinghorne, eleventh Lord Glamis (born 1643) was styled Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, Viscount Lyon, Lord Glammis, Tannadyce, Sidlaw and Stradichtie on 1 July 1677. The titles of Baron Bowes of Streatlam Castle in the county Durham, and of Lundedale in the county of York in the Peerage of the United Kingdom were conferred upon John Lyon, tenth Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and eighteenth Lord Glamis (1769-1820) in 1815, and upon Claude Lyon, thirteenth Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorn and twenty-first Lord Glamis (1824-1904) in 1887.Glamis Castle in Glamis, Forfarshire, is the seat of the Earl of Strathmore.
