The family attended St Margaret's Episcopal Church, Lochee, where Zacchariah Junks and his two sons, Herbert and Ernest were all members of the choir. The sons attended Liff Road Public School. Herbert started his career in Valentine's postcard and publishing business in Dundee before World War I, where he took a keen interest in photography, developing and enlarging his own prints. He eventually possessed a Pathescope 9.5mm cine camera. He regularly took part as a member of the Scottish Miniature Rifle Team in the Shooting Competitions at Bisley. After World War I he resumed his career with Valentine's as a traveller, and moved to Exeter in 1926 with his Dundonian wife Katherine Bain.
