ActivityIn 1549 Robert Carnegie of Kinnaird took possession of lands which were erected into the Barony of Ethie in 1565. David Carnegie of Colluthie and Kinnaird settled the barony on his second son John Carnegie on 1 March 1595. Sir John Carnegie (c 1579-1667) was knighted in 1610 or 1611 and was raised to the Peerage as Lord Lour in 1639. In 1647 he was rewarded for his faithful services and loyalty to Charles I by being created Earl of Ethie, Lord Lour and Eglismaldie. In 1666, he procured a patent to change his titles to Earl of Northesk and Lord Rosehill and Eglismauldie. Ethie Castle, in Inverkeilor parish, Forfarshire is the seat of the Earls of Northesk. It was built and inhabited by Cardinal Beaton.
