Activity | In 1870 a ship capsized on the journey between Dundee and Newport and eighteen people including the popular 'Cossack Jock' -Captain Spalding- drowned. Within a few days of the disaster a fund had been opened and £700 subscribed to care for Dundee children orphaned by the disaster. The Dundee Orphanage was initially situated in Small's Wynd, and was superseded by a building in Ferry Road. |
