ActivityJames Low was born in Kirriemuir in 1849 and came to Dundee around 1866. He rented a shop in Hunter Street and traded as a grocer. In 1870 he was joined by his brother William Low. In 1871, James Low formed Lindsay and Low, preserve, bread and confectionery manufacturing business, with William Lindsay and consequently handed over the grocery business to William in 1879. William's brother-in-law William Rettie joined the firm in 1885 and the name became William Low and Company. By 1888 there were thirty one branches. In 1917 the partnership was incorporated as William Low and Company, Limited. The company's first supermarket opened in 1963 at Aberdeen.
