Person NameNether Howden, Channelkirk
ActivityThe first reference to Nether Howden was when it was gifted by the King to John Tennent, 1539. The previous name of the district had been Holdene and it had been divided at the beginning of the 16th century into Over Howden and Nether Howden. The lands had been owned by Kelso Abbey and had been given to the Kers of Cessford. It then passed to the Dukes of Roxburgh who were members of the Ker family. The lands were then administered by various owners and tenants until they passed to the Marquis of Tweedale, 1790. In 1863 the tenant was David Tweedie.
