Person NamePublic Assistance; Roxburgshire County Council
ActivityThe Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929 (19 & 20 Geo. V, c.25) abolished parish councils, which had previously administered poor relief. Town councils of large burghs became the local authorities for the administration of the poor law in their area; in the landward areas the function passed to the county council and was often delegated to district councils. The public assistance function of local authorities was largely abolished in 1948 with the introduction of a welfare system operated by central government (National Insurance Act 1946, 9 & 10 Geo. VI, c.67; National Assistance Act 1948, 11 & 12 Geo. VI, c.29). ]
