| Brief Description | The William Mitchell collection of Northwest Coast ethnography (North America) comprises 31 items. The collection includes 11 Haida argillite carvings from Haida Gwaii (formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia). Other items include masks (probably Tsimshian) and a Chilkat robe. Mitchell, born in Aberdeen in 1802, worked for the Hudson Bay Company continuously from 1835 till his death in Victoria in 1876. He served as master of the 'Recovery' and the 'Una', and was Mate of the 'Beaver', the first steamship on the American Pacific Coast which is clearly depicted on one of the argillite pipes. 'Mitchell Harbour' of the Moresby Island and 'Mitchell Bay' of Malcolm Island were named after him.
Super collection: Marischal Museum. Objects: spoon; mask; pipe; plate; figure; model canoe; Chilkat robe; ladle.
