Brief Description | Carved wooden female figure in light-coloured wood, with black pigment decorating the hair and feet and '+' and '-'; scarification marks on face and stomach. Facial expression is simple and mouth is depicted as a straight line. Neck of figure is carved with concentric ridges. Hairstyle is depicted as two 'horn' shapes meeting in the middle. This type of hairstyle was popular with women in Ghana in the 19th and early 20th Century. 1912 Catalogue entry reads 'used to protect household from evil', however it is more likely that this is a female fertility figure. Entire figure is coated in a layer of dark varnish, and figure has an accompanying circular wooden base. |
