Charles William Mitchell (1854-1903)
Mary Stewart was the second of five daughters of David and Margaret Stewart, who owned the Aberdeen Comb Works. In 1886 she married the mathematician Charles Niven (1845-1923) who, as professor of Natural Philosophy (Physics), oversaw its move to Marischal College in 1906. The painting dates to 1894.

"Wife of Professor Charles Niven (1845-1923) (see 31920) Niven was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Aberdeen from 1880-1922. Dr Charles Mitchell (1820-95), a graduate of Marischal College (1840) was the donor of the Mitchell Hall and Tower and other benefactions. Charles W. Mitchell, his son, was a Northumberland based portrait and genre painter."
