Caption "Scott is depicted dictating his last novel in his study at Abbotsford. This is a fanciful portrait, an conflation of various periods in the history of Scott and his household. Born in Edinburgh, Francis Grant (1803-78) was a highly successful portrait and animal painter elected President of the RA in 1866. Thomas Hodgetts (fl.1801-46) was a successful London based engraver who contributed plates to J.M.W. Turner's 'Liber Studiorum'."
