The cartoon illustrates a passage from Eric Linklater's novel "Magnus Merriman"and was commissioned by Laurence Henson during the production of his biographical film of Linklater. The cartoon depicts a windy day in Edinburgh, with Magnus being buffeted down Princes Street westward in the direction of the castle. Other characters, including a school boy and vicar, heading eastbound into the wind are blown off their feet. To the background can be seen Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood, the General Assembly Hall and Old Town tenements. To the top left corner a battle scene is depicted. Men can be seen sporting tartan and plaid and holding targes and swords, the battle possibly a depiction of Flodden or Culloden. A tall ship can also be seen to the top middle background. |
