James Keith was the younger brother of the last Earl Marischal. After the failed Jacobite Rising in 1715 they continued to support the cause in mainland Europe, where this portrait was painted in 1724. He later fought for the Spanish, Russian and Prussian armies, finally becoming one of Frederick the Great of Prussia’s favourite generals.
