  <dc:description>Photographic copy of portrait of Sir James McGrigor (1771-1858). Educated at Marischal College and studied medicine at Edinburgh. He became an army surgeon in 1793 and rose to the rank of Inspector General of Hospitals in 1809. Appointed Director of the Army Medical Department in 1815, and was instrumental in forming the Royal Army Medical Corps. [See MS 2581]</dc:description>
