<dc:title>Surgery teaching notes</dc:title>
<dc:description>Four volumes containing the complete set of Ogston's teaching notes on surgery class plus operative surgery for the period 1895 - 1897. Volumes also cover the period 1897 - 1909. Volume numbers 1 - 3 cover Ogston's surgery class and number 7 covers his operative surgery class.

Notes in the volumes are similar to 'surgery class' and 'operative surgery' [MS 3760/1-2], with slight differences, including omissions & additional information - ?volume 2 of surgery includes deaf-mutism & unlike volume VI of surgery class & general medical teaching notes, there appears to be no notes on military surgery in the surgery series.

The notes cover symptoms & physical characteristics, ?pathology, treatments, methods and other surgeons' methods. Volume 7 contains, to a greater extent, details on operation procedures.

Volume number 1 contains an index for the four volumes, entitled 'Subjects of Course':

See the item - level descriptions for further details on the subjects contained in the volumes.

?Ogston sometimes refers to the next subject in the surgery class, which is not necessarily in the same volume.

In addition, volume number 1 includes loose sheets of subject lists for the years 1896 - 1909, which include the number of days required to complete Ogston's course. Undated sheet of paper is annotated ?'in 1896 - 7 - try to cut off all oprs same obligation & major oprs & take in more general surgery'. Sheet of paper dated 1899 - 1900 annotated 'operative surgery on Fridays Monday, Practical Class Surg. ?Photography'. Sheet of paper dated 1900 - 1901 mentions that operative surgery had 22 lectures. Sheet of paper dated 1903 - 1905 annotated 'session commenced 13th Oct' and session 'ends 16th March' and sheet of paper entitled 'Theoretical Surgery'.

Loose sheets mention texts which Ogston used in his teachings: 'Holmes Surgery Pick', 'Treves Surgery', 'Treves Operation Surgery', 'International Text Book of Surgery by Warren & Gould - Saunders & Co 1901. 2 vols'; 'Modern Surgery. Da Costa: Saunders & Co 3rd Ed. 1900. 1 vol'; 'Manual of surgery Rose & Carless Bailliere 2 Ed [scored out and replaced with 5th Ed]. 1899'; 'Operative surgery ?waring Peutlam 1898'. Also, 'Thomson & Miles' Surgery'; ?'Wheelers Operative Surgery Bailliere 1906' and 'Keen & White. Textbook of Surgery. Saunders & G 2 Vols'.

Loose sheets also mention: 'Exams 1 Sat 16 Dec 99'; 2 Sat 3 Mar 00; P Shep. [Peter Shepherd] 24 Feb 00; Keith 17 Feb 00'. Paper dated 1902 - 1903 annotated '1st Exam to beginning of Dis of Bones 13. Dec 1902'.

Volumes include later annotations on slips of paper, dated 1892 - 1909, which refer to notes taken from medical texts and articles [like the Lancet], on treatments, medicine and surgical drawings. The slips are inserted throughout the volumes, presumably relating to the repeated delivery of Ogston's lectures. The volumes are bound, with 'Professor Ogston Surgery' plus the volume number, in gold inscription on the front cover.</dc:description>
