Mrs Montagu greatly overrates James Hay Beattie's proficiency, but it is indeed considerably beyond his years. Has been fortunate in Masters. Has composed Latin and English prose and verse during winter, which Mrs montagu shall see. Dundas, at instigation of Duchess Gordon, warmly helping Beattie's plan to get James Hay Beattie appointed joint professor. Says it should not be delayed on questions of union of colleges. Beattie explains problems about risks of resignation, and questions of whether two professors can be appointed. Awaiting answer from Duchess. Montagu advances pretty well in learning. Beattie has not given up plan of Addison preface. </dc:description>
