Bruce is referred to as "a speciall frend of myne named Robert Bruce, merchand of the toun of culross".

Hay acquired his lands of Easter Kennet in Clackmannanshire from Robert Bruce of Blairhall, whse family had close connections with the royal burgh of Cilross.</dc:description>
