ActivityThe Loyal Ettrick Forest Lodge opened on the 31 January 1843 with 25 members. The exact date of the foundation of the United Order of Oddfellows is unknown although it was in existence from the 17th century in the City of London. The name derives from the fact that the Society was made up from members of different trades. In the late 18th century the London Grand Lodge of United Oddfellows was the head of the Order with lodges established throughout Britain. The centre of the Oddfellows movement moved to Sheffield in the 19th century with the formation of a Grand Lodge, and in 1810 the Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity Friendly Society was formed as a breakaway movement. The Oddfellows Order is a fraternal organisation which provided the means by which ordinary people could save for their old age, infirmity or burial but it also fulfilled a social function. The Independent Order of Oddfellows Manchester Unity Friendly Society is now one of the largest friendly societies in the UK. It is still a non-profit friendly society operating for the mutual benefit of its members and is owned by its members. The Oddfellows now have over 100,000 members in the UK and another 500,000 around the world.
