ActivityDr Harold John Taylor (1906-1996) spent nearly forty years working in India as an educational missionary. In 1927, shortly after he graduated in physics from Sheffield University, the United Free Church of Scotland appointed him to teach science at Wilson College, Bombay. He returned to Britain in the 1930's to undertake doctoral research at the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, under Lord Rutherford. Apart from this period of leave, he remained at Wilson College until 1954 when he was appointed Principal of the Scottish Church College, Calcutta. In 1960 he became Principal of the Union Christian College, Barapani, Assam, and in 1962, Vice Chancellor of the University of Gauhati. He married Jane R. Watt, Church of Scotland missionary and Principal of St Margaret's School, Poona, in 1948. Dr Taylor left India in 1967 and died in Edinburgh in 1996.
