ActivityThe National Union of General and Municipal Workers originated in 1924 by the amalgamation of the National Amalgamated Union of Labour, the National Union of General Workers and the Municipal Employees Association. In 1955 it was joined by South Durham and North Yorkshire Salt Maker's Union, the Union of Salt, Chemical and Industrial General Workers in 1969, the National Union of Waterworks' Employees in 1972, the United Rubber, Plastic and Allied Workers in 1974, the Scottish Professional Footballers' Association in 1975 and the Coopers and Allied Workers' Federation of Great Britain in 1979. In 1982 the union amalgamated with the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmiths and Structural Workers to form the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union
