ActivityDonald Whyte was born on 13 March 1926 at Newtongrange, Mid Lothian, the son of John Whyte and Catherine Dunachie. In 1951 he married Mary Burton. He was educated at Crookston School, Musselburgh and at the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies, Canterbury. He was a professional genealogist from 1968-1976 and in 1980 was appointed lecturer in Genealogical Studies, Extra-Mural Department, Linlithgow Academy. He was Scottish Adviser, Society for British Genealogy and Family History from 1981-1986. He was a member of numerous history societies and was interested in heraldry. His publications include 'The Whytes: a Family Memorial' (1961); 'A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the U.S.A. (1972, 1978, 1986); 'Introducing Scottish Genealogical Research (1978, 1984); 'The Hogs of Newliston and Kellie' (1981); 'Scottish Ancestry Research: A Brief Guide' (1984): 'A Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada Before Confederation' (1986); 'Walter MacFarlane Clan Chief and Antiquary' (1988). He was a member of Kirkliston and Winchburgh District Council, 1964-1975 and chairman, 1970-1973, member of West Lothian County Council, 1970-1975, and Justice of the Peace in Edinburgh from 1975.
