Before 1900 the family moved to New Deer, and James and his father ran a slater and mason's business together with his brother John, renowned penny whistler and fiddler. James was tutored in playing the violin by Herr Pikorny, master in Aberdeen. He was also taught by Bill Duguid of Fyvie at Deershul School. In 1912 he won a fiddle competition in Dundee and was awarded with a gold medal by Andrew Carnegie. He continued in his father's mason and slater business but also taught violin lessons in New Deer. He performed in numerous concerts with such musicians as Maria Carr, John Dickie, George Taylor and Gavin Greig. He was also an expert bee keeper and declared himself a communist.
