ActivitySir William Dunbar, 7th Bart of Mochrum (1812-1889), was the son of James Dunbar (1778-1840) and Anna Catharina (d 1860), the daughter of William Ferdinand, Baron de Reede d'Oudtshoorn of Holland. He succeeded his father's older brother Sir William Rowe Dunbar, 6th Bart (1776-1841), who's only daughter, Helen (d 1808) died young. Sir William, 7th Bart was MP for Wigtown Burghs, 1857-1865, DL and JP, a Lord of the Treasury, Keeper of the Prince of Wales Privy Seal, 1859-1865 and a member of the Council of the Duchy of Cornwall, 1863-1865. Dunbar was the Controller-General of H M Exchequer and Auditor -General, 1867-1888. He was Keeper of the Great Seal of the Prince of Wales for Scotland, 1863-1865. Sir William married Catherine Hay (d 1890) the eldest daughter of James Paterson of Carpow , Perthshire, and they had two sons, Uthred James Hay (8th Bart) and William Cospatrick (9th Bart).
