ActivityThe Maxwell family were the owners of Steilston in the parish of Holywood, Dumfries from 1630. The property passed to William Welsh, the nephew of Agnes Carlyle nee Welsh, c 1781. He married Mary, the daughter of William Newhall of Barskeoch.George MacMurdo (d 1798), merchant, and tenant of Enrick, near Dumfries married in Virginia c 1752 Anne, née Stark, widow of John Ravenscroft, proprietor of the Manor and Blackwater plantations and other properties in Prince George County, Virginia. He administered these dower estates from Scotland; the MacMurdo family appear to have been related to Mrs Marion Newhall née Thomson.Thomas Newhalll (d 1823) was the tenant of Edinghame and Billies [Kelton] and Machermore [Minnigaff), a son of James Newhall of Stranfasket (d 1811) and grandson of William (d 1765), of Barskeoch and Earlston [Kells]. His son, James Newhall of Goldielea [Troqueer] Agent of the British Linen Bank in Newton Stewart (d 1861), married Marion, née Thomson, (d 1911).
