ActivityThe Association was established at a meeting in Glasgow in 1923, following on the experiences of several Special School teachers on a local Care Committee formed in Paisley, c 1920, and the title of the organisation was changed at the first AGM from the 'Central Association of After-Care Committees' to 'The Scottish Association of Mental Welfare', representing an extension of the Association's aims from the care of mentally handicapped children to include more general mental health work.In 1938 the SAMW amalgamated with the Scottish Child Guidance Council [established, 1934] under the title 'Scottish Association for Mental Hygiene', re-named [1949] the Scottish Association for Mental Health. Following a brief period in abeyance, the Association was re-organised on its present basis in 1976-1977.
