ActivityRev Professor John Foster (1898-1973), professor of Ecclesiastical History, was educated at Bradford Grammar School, Birmingham University and Handsworth Theological College. He was a member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 1917-1919 and was ordained as a Methodist minister in 1922, and travelled to South China in 1922, for the Methodist Missionary Society. He married Amy Whittaker in 1926. Foster was Professor of Church History at Union Theological College, Canton, 1926-1937 and Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham, 1937-1947, and was an examiner for the University of Wales, 1948-1952, Aberdeen University, 1951-1954 and St Andrews University, 1957-1961. He was visiting professor at the theology colleges of India, 1954 and Nigeria, 1965, and made frequent broadcasts on radio, from 1943, and television, from 1956. He was awarded an Hon DD, Aberdeen, 1945, and wrote several books based on his experiences in China, 1928-1939, and on the history of the Church. Foster's last publications were 'Church History I: The First Advance' (1972) and 'II: Setback and Recovery', (1973).
