ActivityThe Monkland Canal was constructed with the main purpose of supplying Glasgow with coal from the Monklands. An Act was obtained in 1770 and construction began with James Watt (1736-1819) as engineer. It was completed in 1793 although certain parts had been in use earlier. Although relatively small and it could only take small barges, not ships, it quickly became one of the busiest canals in Britain. It suffered a decline in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through increased competition from new railways. There was some recreational use of the canal in the early 20th Century, but not enough to save it and it closed in the 1950s. Much of the canal was subsequently destroyed due to the building of the M8 motorway.
