EpithetEpiscopalian chapel
ActivityIn 1699 episcopacy was abolished in Scotland. However, the Government allowed those who undertook to live peaceably to take the Oath of Allegiance. Episcopalians were largely Jacobite in sympathy. Many refused to take the Oath and were non-jurors. They worshipped outwith the law.In Montrose the numbers willing to take the oath grew, and by 1720 they decided to build their own Chapel. Money was raised and work was completed by 1722. In 1745 the Chapel was closed by order of the Provost of Montrose as it was suspected of sympathising with the Jacobites: it did not re-open until 1748. In 1857 it burned down and was completely rebuilt.
