ActivityThe Montrose Trades Library was instituted in 1819 and by 1871 contained nearly 6,000 volumes. Benefactors included James Burnes, Provost of Montrose, and Joseph Hume, MP (1777 - 1855) who both presented the library with books. In 1852, Montrose Town Council conferred an annual grant of £10 on the library which enabled the Directors to provide accommodation and maintain the library. The Trades Library was absorbed into the new Public Library when it opened in 1905.
