ActivityThe Forfar Burns Club was instituted in 1893. Its objective was to keep alive the tradition of Scottish literature, poetry and songs, especially Robert Burns' works. It held regular festivals where children would compete for prizes by memorizing poetry and singing traditional songs. In a letter of 12 March 1938, the society was able to boast of teaching 1,100 Forfar children to memorize Songs and Ballads of Scotland, particularly those written by Robert Burns. In that year they also began a school choir competition. The club ceased its activities for the duration of the Second World War. It never recovered from the five-year break. The last recorded meeting was held on 9 December 1946 when it was decided not to resume the club's activities. The last minute finished with the hope that at a later date the society will be able to continue with its work.
