ActivityAlexander Laing was born in Brechin in 1787 to poor agricultural workers. He had little schooling. While he herded cattle he read poetry. He was a poet whose work was largely intended to be sung. Reputedly he had a sweet and powerful singing voice. He earned a competency from his writings. His most famous work is 'Wayside Flowers' which was published in Edinburgh in 1850. He also wrote such songs as 'Archie Allan', 'The Lass of Logie', and 'My Ain Wife'. He died in 1857.
